Yeah it's good to have a crew your age to ride with. There's nothing more awkward than being at a skatepark where you're easily twice as old as the next oldest person there.
Kinda makes you wonder what your doing there, when you gots your crew around you you feel like home at a park.

Hey Guys, Im Flattop. Im 41 I started skating in 1976 and skated non stop until about 1984-85. (then real life, career etc got in the way) Anyway I live in Cocoa Beach ,Florida and we recently got a new Team Pain skatepark here which is totally awesome..I drove past it nearly every day during the construction phase and was thinking to myself that I would have killed for something like this back in the day....So after much debate (with myself)and at the risk of being the oldest Dude at the skatepark I finally broke down and got myself a new board (a Dogtown Thunderbird ) and started skating again...(I bought the dogtown board because it was the closest in size and shape to my all time favorite board which was a variflex "el gato"(which I still have))Anyway... To my surprise I was not the oldest Dude there at all and soon hooked up with a great crew of older bros here in Florida. Amazingly and even after a 21 year lapse I am still able to skate! I have been skating for the past 5 months or so and am starting to improve daily.I wouldnt say that I rip or anything but I certainly am not doing too bad for my age.. The main thing though...is that Skating has really improved everything about my life.I've lost about 20 pounds for starters! But aside from the obvious health benefits, It is just something that I love to do and makes me feel great..I am totally stoked by it again and wonder why I ever stopped. Keep up the good work with this website. Flattop

Welcome aboard Flattop,
It's good to have another El Gato fan in here. I used to skate the Colton Ranch skatepark and just by meeting Eddie & watching his effortless talent as a skater inspired me to keep skating and then purchase his complete Variflex El Gato deck from the pro shop. It was my favorite deck until I snapped it in half doing a fs to disaster. but, someday I will find that deck again.
Please post a pic of it if you can.
Here are a couple of the only shots I have of it.
Peace...

There are 2 other pix on the Misc. Randy tab.

Randy, Here's some shots of the El Gato deck..This is my original setup from when I bought it back in 1980.It has Indy 169's(from 1979,dont know what "stage" that was?) and 65mm SIMS "the wheel" double conicals. The deck has a bit of delamination under the griptape just in front of the back truck and luckily enough it never broke in half.I have skated it a few times and it just feels "soggy" or something so it has now been promoted to " museum piece".Even though its not much to look at....It makes me feel good to look at it ,as it represents alot of very good times gone past. I have done no work to it so I may restore it a bit in the future. If you ever come across a source for those "el gato" stickers it had on the top of the deck and in the router out wells underneath ,let me know.Or even just a scan of the sticker so I can print my own . Your lucky to have met the man himself.I was living in Ireland at that time and my main influence came from just analysing photos of Eddie Skating in "Skateboarder" magazine.I loved his style and especially his frontside rock n rolls.Remember the "Elguerial"? I thought that was the coolest move ever and would love to see a sequence shot of how it was done. Stay Rad Flattop

That was taken at Flowmotion skatepark in Richmond Va. around 1981 after the park had closed. I used to skate it after school everyday by myself.

Hey Sean,
Welcome aboard.
I just responded to your other post.
there are ton's of great ditches in your area.
you should hook up with www.sflongboarding.com
Most of the NorCal pix I have on my site are from them.
Plus a lot of them look like cool spot's you shouldn't have problems with the cops.
Take pix & send 'em in when you get back.
-Peace

I'm Brandon, 35yo, I been living in ABQ for about 2 years now. I'm originally from western PA (Washington PA area), but grew up mostly in Riverside, CA and Sterling Heights, MI. I've also lived in Las Cruces, NM; Bedford UK, and a few other shitty places. I started skating again about a year and a half ago. I moved here to Albuquerque and couldn't resist the urge after driving around and seeing the hundreds (maybe more) skateable ditches here. My first ever "skate-spot" was the Wedge in Riverside, so ditches hold some special memories for me. I actually tried to start skating again maybe 3-4 years ago, but was really discouraged by the changes in equipment (popsicle sticks and hard/small wheels). This was in Las Cruces NM - shitty park, a few ditches, but since I've been up here, I have discovered that I can skate how and what I want, and can get pretty much anything I need online (I'm loving the Tsu's Randy). I finally got a new camera, so I'll post some pics when I get the chance. I'm riding the "San Antonio" ditch alot lately. Smooth as ***, not as steep as Indian School, and easily accessable (I park in the Cracker Barrel parking lot and skate about a quarter mile uphill to my "starting point"). I plan to check out more ditches this summer - my 13yo son is going to be visiting, and I got him into ditches over Christmas break, so I'll have a skate partner.
